Routine

Here's my project. I've been really sick for I while and I based it off of that. Basically I collected a day's worth of my most...significant? i guess you can say tissues. I feel like this basically sums up the last few weeks of my life perfectly; with dirty tissues. I didn't have alot of trouble with this. It was mostly the printing sitch that kicked my ass. Took me forever. I do wish I did something with the background and I wish the text showed darker on the computer. I like the way it looks printed out but on the computer I feel like it's more of a strain to see.

This is my composite project. I had a little bit of trouble with it and am not entirely satisfied with my final outcome. Like I always say though, me and computers do not combine well in the making of art. Overall it was an average assignment that I had some difficulties with.

Tuesday Lecture, Book Binding

I was one of the monitors that was asked to help prepare the "books" to be bound so I came in expected something completely different. It was funny cause I don't really think the person who was assigned for my class to teach us really knew what she was doing. I think I grasped the concept but I was having difficulty. My came out looking kind of like a braid..I think that was what it was supposed to look like. I know that my next 2d project involves book binding..I'm not that excited for it. Maybe the workshop just gave me the wrong impression of it. I just kept getting frustrated. Maybe it was just too early in the morning...

lectureee

The lecture last week pertained to internships. Seniors just kind of shared their stories on how they got hired and what they did as interns. I found the lecture to be interesting; obviously interning is something we are all going to need to do at one point or another during our college career so an early introduction to such is, in my opinion, much needed. Plus the graphic design girl was so perky so early in the morning and a mix between annoyingly entertaining and entertaining(ly?) annoying. Either way i dug it.

Self Portrait, Jenny Saville

This assignment was okay..it was kind of frustrating trying to figure out how to copy her style cusing a computer program. I kind of have it down but i don't really like my final piece. I also forgot to change the settings on my history so alot of my mistakes i couldn't go back and correct...tha twas annoying. Overall it was an okay assignment.

Waking Life

So I am definitely trying to watch this later when I have a break from school work. I find the central focus of the movie to be extremely compelling. It is also interesting to be how different artists tackle the job of creating a moving picture out of screen shots from a movie. i loved the way the styles would just switch off and into each other; it made for something all the more interesting. I also found the way shadow movement was made more obvious while watching it from an adobe illustrator perspective when in regular life one does not really notice such things. weird...

Lecture, Ben Volta

I was really interested in Ben's work. I know some chick questioned whether or not he felt like it was actually HIS work but I definitely do; he's the mastermind behind the whole concept the kids are working on. i feel that spreading art is extremely important; especially in neighborhoods such as North Philadelphia where kids are not as exposed to the arts as other more well-off kids are. I'm interested in getting involved with the communal arts program here at Tyler and hearing him talk just sort of pushed me more in that direction.

Tuesday's Lecture, H. John Thompson

He was an interesting artist, definitely. He considered himself a painter but did more three dimensional works. I like the idea of pulling painting away from its usual setting and creating something different. I'm sure mad people consider him to be a sculptor but I feel like if he is conducting himself as a painter and setting up his work as he would if he were painting, than his works are paintings. I really enjoyed this lecture. It kind of inspired me to consider what qualifies as a painting ans how I can branch out from the box the art world has put the art of painting in.

Tuesday's Lecture

This week's lecture just focused on choosing next semester's classes. We were basically advised to get certain classes out of the way so that we could work on declaring or more experimental art courses. This means that I have to take my maths   -___-

We were informed of the option of taking summer classes at a local college or university of ours during the summer. I might just do that. Get the annoying stuff out of the way. Plus..aren't summer courses always really short? Like a crash course.

Jenny Saville

Jenny is an English painter who's works have been compared to Lucian Freud and Rubens. She has also stated that she draws a lot of influence from Picasso. Her paintings are all larger than life and generally have a gruesome feel to them. Understandable, I know she has observed many plastic surgery procedures for influence.

Self Portrait Collage

This is my self portrait collage. It was actually kind of relaxing to do this comparing it to other foundations homework. It didn't take me very long to do. I chose to take a more abstract approach to it. I figured it would be more fun that way :)

Patterns :)

This exercise wasn't hard to do at all. Took me like 10 minutes, max. I liked it too. It was fun experimenting with the paintbrush tool and then making the fun shapes I made into swatches. I'll definitely use this method for my self portrait.

Tuesday's Lecture, Doug Bucci

Doug was cool. I like his innovative way of mixing computers with 3d art. You'd think those elements were on completely different sides of the art making spectrum. I feel like he was one of the more relatable speakers we've had. His methods of speech delivery were more casual then the others and his subject matter was really, well real. Being an art major one doesn't ever truly know what they're gonna do career wise but like he said that's kind of the beauty of it. Comfort is boring; pshhhhh comfort.

Tuesday's Lecture

This week we were visited by Marianne Dages, a custom book binder and printmaker. Her talk was primarily about how your different experiences shape the way you create your own studio space. She travelled to several different residencies and was employed by several different artists and/or companies and she brought all the things she learned from each together to not only create her studio but to figure out what she wanted to do as an artist. I found her talk interesting. I'm really into the concept of residencies and how they bring this artist community into an isolated spot to just do work and learn from one another.

Tuesday's Lecture

Today Candy Depew, a designer, came to talk to us about her experiences in the art world. She was an interesting character. I enjoyed her mentioning of her experiences working as a resident artist. It nice to hear that she still gets to learn more as an artist even after schooling. I feel like that is one of the endearing qualities about art, loving art, and being an artist; you are always learning and experiencing new things. It was a nice talk and I liked her work.

 

 

 

Memoir, edited.

I still couldn't find it in me to change the way the type looks. I feel like it would take away from the direction I was going with this project. I did make "Mami," larger than before..if that's any consolation. :)

Tuesday's Lecture

Tuesday's guest was Peter Hanley, a graphic artist, so his talk pertains more to Foundation Computers than other Foundations courses. I will be frank, my mind was in a tired haze filled with sleepy nonsense so I only got the gist of what the speaker was saying. I do recall his mentioning not letting the medium of choice control the artist. In his case it was computers but I feel that this logic can extend to other concentrations. As for the rest of his speech the saying "in one ear out the other" comes to mind quickly followed by "it's me, not you." I was sleep deprived and so I went to sleep but I feel the need to clarify that the speaker and his subject matter did not put me to sleep. I swear Gerard. I swear!!

Deviant Art: I really like looking at other people's work and this site is like the Facebook of art. With careful browsing you can find some really inspiring stuff. Its better than just plain fb stalking.

Madbury Club: This is a site created by a girl I know Kelly and a couple of other art orientated individuals. Its not entirely visual art but I feel you need a grasp on other art forms to really understand your own. Its cool: good writing, good substance. 

UNURTH: I'm really into street art. I like how public it is, how, generally speaking, quickly its made. I just find it really compelling. This site is just a collection of graffiti work..and not weird scribbles of letter you can't make out either; real graffiti.

David Choe: I just like going on his site from time to time to look over his stuff. Google has some great stuff of his too. He reminds me of like a modern-day Egon Schiele or something, I don't know. I really like his work. He's crazy, maybe even deranged but his style is on point.

Juxtapoz: Cool blogs, snippets of features in their new issues, and some awesome reader art. They also have a guide to art galleries per city which is nice.

Alyssa Monk: I love looking at her paintings. They're mad realistic and the way she chooses to capture her subjects is always interesting. Mind blowing flesh painter.
